Women in Maritime – IMO and WISTA International Survey 2021

Women in Maritime – IMO and WISTA International Survey 2021

In February this year, IMO, together with WISTA International, launched a study to collect and analyse data on the number of women employed in the maritime sector, a key practical outcome resulting from the 2019 World Maritime theme Empowering Women in the Maritime Community. Through Circular Letter No.4370, Member States, NGOs and IGOs are encouraged to support this initiative by participating in this online survey. The survey closes on 30 June 2021.

Having comparable data and a reliable baseline are key components when creating programmes and proposing policies that will increase the participation of women in maritime. We will also be incorporating lessons learned from this survey in future activities. We would therefore encourage feedback from NGOs to ensure that we are gathering meaningful data that will help shape the sustainability of a diverse maritime sector.

There is no doubt that collating this data is both difficult and time-consuming. However, it is important.
