Navigating Uncertainty While Building Momentum

Practical industry insights are more important than ever.

As we enter the third quarter of 2026, the marine fuels sector continues to operate against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty. The conflict served as a stark reminder of how quickly geopolitical events can influence energy markets, supply chains and operational planning. The resulting volatility reinforced the importance of resilience, supply chain flexibility and transparent communication across the bunker value chain.

For Asia, where maritime trade remains the lifeblood of regional economies, collaboration and the sharing of practical industry insights have become more important than ever. In an increasingly interconnected environment, strong partnerships and open dialogue remain essential as the industry navigates uncertainty while continuing to move forward on longer-term priorities.

Strengthening Connections
Across the Region
The highlight of the past quarter was undoubtedly the IBIA Asia Dinner, held during Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) on 22 April 2026. This year’s dinner welcomed a record 450 attendees, bringing together members, regulators, industry leaders and stakeholders from across the region for an evening of networking, conversation and reconnecting with industry peers. The exceptional turnout reflected the industry’s continued commitment to coming together, despite the challenges and uncertainties facing the sector.

SMW also provided an excellent platform for conversations on the future of marine fuels. Together with the Global Centre for Green Fuels (GCGF), IBIA co-organised the Half-Day Workshop on Ethanol & Methanol: Alcohol-Based Fuel Pathways for Shipping. The workshop explored the practical realities of adopting alcohol-based marine fuels, covering safety considerations, regulatory developments and operational readiness. As the industry continues to balance decarbonisation ambitions with commercial and geopolitical realities, these discussions remain both timely and necessary.

IBIA’s engagement with the industry continued beyond Singapore Maritime Week. In May, IBIA was represented at the MPA Marine Fuels Forum, where a presentation on State of the Bunker Industry & the Evolving Geopolitical Landscape discussed the implications of recent geopolitical developments on the bunker industry, emphasising the importance of diversification, resilient supply chains and close collaboration across the value chain.

Keeping the Conversation Going
Looking ahead, preparations are well underway for several important industry events in the second half of the year. IBIA will have a strong presence at SIBCON 2026, continuing our support for one of the region’s leading marine fuels conferences and providing another opportunity to engage with industry stakeholders. We are also preparing for the IBIA Annual Convention in New York and Hong Kong Maritime Week. Together, these events will provide valuable opportunities to discuss safety, operational excellence, market developments and the transition towards lower-carbon marine fuels.

While geopolitical developments will undoubtedly continue to influence global energy markets, the industry’s ability to adapt has once again demonstrated the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing and trusted industry engagement.

IBIA Asia remains committed to connecting people, policy and practice across the region. Whether through our training programmes, industry events or partnerships with regulators and stakeholders, we will continue to support a safe, transparent and resilient marine fuels sector while helping the industry prepare for the opportunities and challenges ahead.
