ISO 8217:2024 Marine fuel specification released

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) has released the latest version of the marine fuel specification, ISO 8217:2024. This seventh edition marks the first complete revision since 2017, effectively replacing the previous ISO 8217:2017 standard.

ISO 8217:2024 introduces several significant updates, most notably the inclusion of 0.50% Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) grades, which have become the predominant marine fuel following the IMO 2020 regulation. Additionally, the new standard features four new RM grades for fuels with 0.50% or 0.10% sulphur content and five new ‘RF’ biofuel grades to accommodate the growing use of biofuel bunkers with unrestricted FAME content.

The full ISO 8217:2024 specification is now available on the ISO website, reflecting the latest advancements and regulatory requirements in marine fuels.
