IBIA Gains Consultative Status for London Convention and Protocol
IBIA has today been granted consultative status for the meetings of the Governing Bodies of the International Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter, 1972 (London Convention) and the 1996 Protocol to the London Convention (London Protocol) held under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization. The objective of the London Convention and Protocol is to promote the effective control of all sources of marine pollution and to take all practicable steps to prevent pollution of the sea by dumping of wastes and other matter.
The reduction of GHG emissions from international shipping is one of the most important issues under consideration by the IMO and has significant implications for international shipping and beyond. IBIA’s membership will be at the fulcrum of the future energy transition for shipping and therefore IBIA is pleased that it can participate as an observer in all relevant IMO policy making forums relating to marine environmental protection.
In this regard, the work of the Governing Bodies on marine geoengineering and carbon, capture and storage is of particular interest to IBIA’s membership, as discharging, disposing of or off-loading carbon dioxide emissions captured on board ships trading internationally becomes a distinct possibility in the future.
