IBIA’s Chair, Constantinos Capetanakis on green corridors

In a new feature by SeaNews, IBIA’s Chair, Constantinos Capetanakis, highlights how green shipping corridors are evolving and why green bunkering corridors will be essential to turning today’s pilots into scalable, bankable decarbonisation pathways.

He emphasises that green corridors act as real-world laboratories, concentrating learning on policy, fuels, infrastructure and operations. But to truly accelerate the uptake of low- and zero-emission fuels, they must prioritise interoperability, fuel availability and safety, rather than betting on a single technology.

Capetanakis stresses that port and flag states must shift from compliance checkers to proactive facilitators through harmonised safety standards, coordinated inspections and consistent GHG-intensity verification. Regulatory fragmentation, slow permitting and the limited production scale of new fuels remain major barriers — and greater clarity across IMO, EU and regional schemes is essential to unlock investment.

Crucially, he notes that bunkering has often been treated as secondary in corridor planning. For corridors to scale, green bunkering corridors — with aligned supply chains, equipment compatibility, safety procedures, and high-quality training — must be placed at the centre.

Funding will rely on blended finance, PPPs, targeted grants, contracts-for-difference and long-term offtake agreements — all anchored by strong revenue certainty. Without this, new-fuel bunkering infrastructure will remain difficult to justify.
