Nigel Draffin honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award in Amsterdam

Nigel Draffin has been recognised with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this week’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference Europe in Amsterdam, organised by Riviera Maritime Media. The award celebrates his remarkable career, his contribution to shipping and marine engineering, and his tireless work to support the industry’s transition to cleaner fuels.

Nigel’s career began at sea with Shell in 1966, before moving ashore to take on senior roles in research, operations and fuel procurement. He later became a well-known figure in bunker broking, technical consultancy and industry forums, and was a founding member of IBIA. Over the years, he has written 13 books on bunkering and shipping and become a familiar face at conferences worldwide.

His influence on the marine fuel industry has been profound. Nigel has helped shape how the industry addresses fuel quality, safety and decarbonisation, especially through his dedicated work with IBIA. As Chairman, Treasurer and long-standing Board Member, his leadership, integrity and expertise have steered the organisation through key policy debates and industry transitions.

Colleagues across the sector describe him not only as an authority, but as a teacher, mentor and guide. Known for his unique ability to make complex technical issues simple and accessible, Nigel has trained thousands of professionals worldwide. His book Introduction to Bunkering remains a cornerstone text, and his passion for knowledge-sharing continues to inspire. “He listens, he explains, he gives direction,” noted one long-time collaborator. “He is like a teacher and a protector – honest, transparent and always fair.”

Nigel’s reputation also rests on his personal qualities. He is admired for his openness, his willingness to cooperate, and his warm presence at industry gatherings. Whether addressing the International Maritime Organization on technical fuel issues, or exchanging stories and jokes at conferences, he has always been seen as approachable and engaging. His humility is equally noted: despite his achievements, he is quick to credit those around him and often remarks that his successes are shared.

Reflecting on this recognition, IBIA Executive Director Alexander Prokopakis said: “Nigel has been at the heart of IBIA since its inception. His technical knowledge, his integrity, and his generosity in sharing both have had a profound impact not just on our organisation, but on the entire industry. This award is richly deserved, and we are proud to see him honoured for a lifetime of dedication and leadership.”

As one colleague summed up: “Nigel has been one of the most significant presences in marine fuels for more than 30 years. His legacy lies not only in the books he has written and the policies he has influenced, but in the countless individuals he has taught, inspired and befriended.”

This Lifetime Achievement Award is a fitting tribute to a man whose contribution will resonate for years to come.
